By now you’re probably familiar with the issue of trans travellers being banned from hotels and forced to stay in rooms they don’t belong.
But there’s a much bigger issue facing trans travellers around the world, and that is the threat of violence, kidnapping, and assault.
According to a new report, more than 100,000 trans travellers were victims of violence in the first half of this year.
Trans travellers are vulnerable to violence and sexual assault because of the way the hotels industry treats them, the report found.
In fact, more trans travellers had been assaulted in 2017 than in any other year.
The report comes after a trans woman was brutally beaten and raped in Mumbai.
The incident took place in February and she was attacked by a mob of people in the city.
A woman was allegedly sexually assaulted in Mumbai in March.
In 2017, more people were killed in the United States than in the previous five years combined.
The number of murders of trans people jumped by 8.5 per cent in 2017 compared to 2016.
In total, more women were killed by intimate partners, men, and men-identified people in 2017, according to the report.
The highest murder rate was in New York City, where trans women were murdered at an alarming rate.
